Second ReHousIn Consortium meeting in Vienna: Taking stock of progress and planning next steps

From 14 to 16 May 2025, the second ReHousIn consortium meeting took place in Vienna, hosted by the project team at TU Wien. Project partners shared preliminary research findings, and the next phase of the research project was strategically planned. Partners presented innovative approaches to data processing to align census and green data, methodological approaches for comparison across national contexts, and plans for an interactive web-documentary, among other topics.
In addition to these discussions, the project staff took part in site visits across Vienna that showcased local examples of affordable housing and sustainability interventions. These included:
- Touring a brownfield redevelopment project integrating nature-based solutions, densification strategies, and retrofitting efforts
- Visiting a neighborhood-based planning initiative with a strong focus on participation and sustainability
- A walk through the iconic Karl-Marx-Hof social housing estate, exploring Vienna’s legacy and contemporary approaches to social housing
- Urban walk focused on nature-based solutions and streetscape transformations, highlighting tensions around gentrification and public space improvements
Together, these activities deepened our collective understanding of how urban sustainability and affordable housing are being integrated on the ground through case studies from Vienna. As the ReHousIn project continues, the aim is not only academic outputs, but also to showcase practical, context-based policy frameworks for more equitable and ecologically responsible housing futures.
