ReHousIn examines housing inequalities in the United Kingdom through case studies in three distinct types of areas. This research provides insights into housing challenges, policy responses, and the impact of economic, social, and environmental factors.

Case study locations

  • Neighbourhoods in a metropolitan region (London): Islington and Barking & Dagenham – Islington, one of the first London boroughs to undergo gentrification, continues to experience rising housing costs alongside sustainability-focused urban regeneration. Barking & Dagenham is undergoing extensive redevelopment, including nature-based solutions, social housing retrofits, and densification projects.
  • Medium-sized city: Blackpool – A coastal town with historical reliance on tourism, Blackpool faces significant economic challenges and housing pressures. The town is a focus of the UK’s "Levelling Up" strategy, with planned regeneration projects, retrofitting initiatives, and social housing improvements.
  • Small town: Bicester – A market town that has been at the centre of sustainability-focused housing initiatives. Bicester features the UK’s first eco-town project and multiple housing developments aimed at integrating green infrastructure, energy-efficient housing, and sustainable urban planning.

ReHousIn conducts comprehensive case studies in nine countries across four European regions: Italy and Spain in southern Europe; Hungary and Poland in central-eastern Europe; Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom in western Europe; and Norway in northern Europe.

In each country, ReHousIn will focus on three types of areas: metropolitan regions, medium-sized cities, and rural areas, analysing 27 cases in sum. The case studies will spotlight effective local initiatives to address housing inequalities and provide valuable insights for tailored policy recommendations.
