ReHousIn examines housing inequalities in Spain through case studies in three distinct types of areas. This research provides insights into housing challenges, policy responses, and the impact of economic, social, and environmental factors.

Case study locations

  • Neighbourhoods in a metropolitan region (Barcelona): La Bordeta and La Marina del Prat Vermell – These areas, located in the Sants-Montjuïc district, are undergoing significant urban transformation. Redevelopment efforts include new housing projects, green transition initiatives, and changing rental dynamics influenced by shifting policies and investment patterns.
  • Medium-sized city: Tarragona – A city with its origins in the oldest Roman settlement of the Iberian Peninsula, Tarragona is a key industrial port city whose surrounding activities have increasingly driven environmental conflicts. Tarragona faces tensions between tourism-driven housing pressures in its historic center, affordability challenges for residents, debates around the future of the economic base of the city (principally between industry and tourism), and evolving policy approaches aimed at balancing these dynamics.
  • Small town: Olot – A rural centre with a strong environmental focus, Olot has implemented climate adaptation and mitigation strategies while addressing housing accessibility and demographic shifts in a non-metropolitan setting.

CASE STUDIES

ReHousIn conducts comprehensive case studies in nine countries across four European regions: Italy and Spain in southern Europe; Hungary and Poland in central-eastern Europe; Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom in western Europe; and Norway in northern Europe.

In each country, ReHousIn will focus on three types of areas: metropolitan regions, medium-sized cities, and rural areas, analysing 27 cases in sum. The case studies will spotlight effective local initiatives to address housing inequalities and provide valuable insights for tailored policy recommendations.
