ReHousIn examines housing inequalities in Italy through case studies in three distinct types of areas. This research provides insights into housing challenges, policy responses, and the impact of economic, social, and environmental factors.

Case study locations

  • Neighbourhoods in a metropolitan region (Milan): Porta Nuova and Navigli –  Porta Nuova is a large-scale urban redevelopment project, driven by relevant developers and financial actors, with significant real estate investments and sustainability features. The Navigli-parco Segantini area showcases a greening process in a very dense urban area, featuring a variety of housing projects and community involvement.
  • Medium-sized city: Reggio Emilia – A city that is implementing ambitious sustainability policies, urban densification strategies, and retrofitting efforts to target economic redevelopment and environmental goals.
  • Small town: Assisi –  A UNESCO-listed town facing challenges of housing availability and affordability, where heritage conservation policies and tourism pressures interact with a very sensitive and unique landscape.

ReHousIn conducts comprehensive case studies in nine countries across four European regions: Italy and Spain in southern Europe; Hungary and Poland in central-eastern Europe; Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom in western Europe; and Norway in northern Europe.

In each country, ReHousIn will focus on three types of areas: metropolitan regions, medium-sized cities, and rural areas, analysing 27 cases in sum. The case studies will spotlight effective local initiatives to address housing inequalities and provide valuable insights for tailored policy recommendations.
