ReHousIn examines housing inequalities in Switzerland through case studies in three distinct types of areas. This research provides insights into housing challenges, policy responses, and the impact of economic, social, and environmental factors.

Case study locations

  • Neighbourhoods in a metropolitan region (Zurich): Altstetten and Langstrasse – Altstetten is undergoing rapid urban transformation, with increasing densification, gentrification, and redevelopment projects affecting housing affordability. Langstrasse, known for its cultural diversity and nightlife, is experiencing housing market pressures, rising rents, and debates over public housing and densification.
  • Medium-sized city: St. Gallen – A regional hub with a stable housing market and progressive urban renewal initiatives. St. Gallen’s housing policy focuses on sustainability, social housing, and densification while balancing economic and demographic shifts.
  • Small town: Amriswil – A former industrial town that has positioned itself as a leader in green transition initiatives. It has implemented extensive energy refurbishment measures and sustainable urban planning while adapting to demographic and economic changes.

ReHousIn conducts comprehensive case studies in nine countries across four European regions: Italy and Spain in southern Europe; Hungary and Poland in central-eastern Europe; Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom in western Europe; and Norway in northern Europe.

In each country, ReHousIn will focus on three types of areas: metropolitan regions, medium-sized cities, and rural areas, analysing 27 cases in sum. The case studies will spotlight effective local initiatives to address housing inequalities and provide valuable insights for tailored policy recommendations.
