ReHousIn examines housing inequalities in Poland through case studies in three distinct types of areas. This research provides insights into housing challenges, policy responses, and the impact of economic, social, and environmental factors.

Case study locations

  • Neighbourhoods in a metropolitan region (Warsaw): Powiśle and Stara Praga – Powiśle, a formerly neglected area, has transformed into a prestigious neighbourhood following large-scale urban regeneration and infrastructure investments. Stara Praga, historically a working-class district, has been undergoing state-led revitalisation while experiencing increasing gentrification.
  • Medium-sized city: Pabianice – A shrinking city near Łódź, formerly a textile industry hub, now adapting to economic shifts. Pabianice has been implementing revitalisation projects focused on urban renewal, transport infrastructure, and sustainable public spaces.
  • Small town: Poddębice – A rural centre known for its thermal waters, which have been incorporated into nature-based solutions for local development and housing adaptation.

CASE STUDIES

ReHousIn conducts comprehensive case studies in nine countries across four European regions: Italy and Spain in southern Europe; Hungary and Poland in central-eastern Europe; Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom in western Europe; and Norway in northern Europe.

In each country, ReHousIn will focus on three types of areas: metropolitan regions, medium-sized cities, and rural areas, analysing 27 cases in sum. The case studies will spotlight effective local initiatives to address housing inequalities and provide valuable insights for tailored policy recommendations.
