Case study report - Milan
Milan is the capital city of the northern-Italian region of Lombardy, and the second largest city in the country (after Rome). The core municipality has around 1,4 million inhabitants within a rather small area of around 181 km². However, it is part of the higher administrative level (in between the national and local level) of the greater Metropolitan Area of Milan, which includes 133 municipalities with a total population of 3.247.623 inhabitants in 1.620 km². The Municipality of Milan highly depends on a vast hinterland for the localization of functions which is not limited to the Metropolitan Area but encompasses a larger post-metropolitan “urban region”. Moreover, Milan´s metropolitan region recorded the highest level of GDP per person employed among Italian metropolitan regions, around 1.2 times higher than Rome. The per capita income is among the highest of the country, with almost € 38.000 per capita gross.
